First TESCO MODECS hit the road in Shrewsbury

The first set of Tesco.com zero emission vans have been launched today at the brand new Tesco Extra environmental store in Shrewsbury. Tesco.com is to be the first company in the UK to run a fleet of battery powered, zero emission home delivery vans.

Each zero emission van will save 21 tonnes of CO2 per year - the equivalent of driving 51,000 miles in a car. This saving is in addition to the 6,000 car journeys that an average dotcom van takes off the road each year.

Laura Wade-Gery, CEO Tesco.com, comments: "Tesco has made a commitment to significantly reduce CO2 emissions throughout the business, and we're very proud to be the first company to invest in this new van technology, helping to create a low-carbon society.

"The carbon neutral vans we have ordered for the dotcom business are both quiet and pollution free - a double benefit for urban environments."

The vans, supplied by Coventry based company Modec, have the same carrying capacity as a standard Tesco.com van, cover a range of over 100 miles before they need recharging and are governed at a maximum speed of 50 mph.

In addition each van is fitted with eutectic refrigeration panels which are filled with a refrigerant gas and brines, and re-charged over night to retain their low temperature throughout the day. The panels are much less likely to leak HFC gas then conventional fridges used in delivery vans.

Jamie Borwick, Chairman Modec, said: "We're delighted to be supplying Tesco with Modec zero emission home delivery vans. When we first set up the company our mission was to build and exceptional commercial vehicle that happens to be environmentally friendly.

"By using the latest modern technology the Modec team has developed a zero emission vehicle that is able to store up to 5 times more energy and is suitable for mainstream users too."

Modec will herald its revolutionary new zero emission vehicle at the second European Conference on electric road transport.

The EET event, which takes place in Brussels from 30 May to 1 June 2007, gathers global industry delegates, research institutes and decision makers together to develop a roadmap for the future of sustainable transport technology.

Geoff Reyner, sales and marketing director said: "Pure electric vehicles, like Modec, play a pivotal role in lowering harmful emissions. Climate change is a growing concern and we're delighted to be showcasing our superb vehicles which offer a solution to some of the environmental issues we face today.

"Attending European events is part of Modec's strategy to raise awareness of the new vehicle in overseas markets," continues Reyner. "Having just entered production in the UK Modec is already receiving enquiries from across the globe. Ride and Drive opportunities like the EET conference are a perfect occasion to show the world what urban commercial vehicles of the future look like. Indeed, many fleet managers and potential dealers will be travelling to Brussels especially to see Modec."
